Sergeant Sheryl A. Pierce was employed by South Londonderry Township from 1987 until 2001. Sgt. Pierce passed away as the result of Hepatitis C, which she contracted in 1994 while subduing a man who was bleeding profusely. She was diagnosed with the disease in 2009 and her condition continued to worsen until she passed away on September 14th, 2013. Sergeant Pierce had served with the South Londonderry Township Police Department for 13 years. She is survived by her mother. Her obituary is posted below.
Sheryl A. Pierce, 46, Harrisburg, formerly of Lebanon, passed away Saturday, September 14, 2013 at the Harrisburg Hospital.
She was born in Ephrata, a daughter of Frank and Joanna Shreiner Pierce, Herndon, PA.
She was employed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as Director, Racing Enforcement, Department of Agriculture, State Horse and Harness Racing Commission. She was a graduate of Eastern Lebanon County High School Class of 1985 and was a Phi Beta Kappa Honors graduate of HACC, receiving an Associate in Arts Degree in Criminal Justice. She pursued further education at Penn State University.
She was a part-time EMT with First Aid & Safety Patrol. She enjoyed hunting. From 1987 to 2001, she was a police officer for South Londonderry Township, being promoted to Sergeant in 1992. She served from 1998 to 2004 as State Conductor of Pennsylvania State Lodge FOP and from 2004 to present was State Treasurer and was presently Chairman of History Committee of the National Lodge. She received over 2,500 hours of law enforcement related and other training, including the Anne B. Anstine Excellence in Public Service Series.
Sheryl was currently a member and treasurer of PA Law Enforcement Foundation, past president Lebanon Lodge #42 FOP and member of Lebanon County Chiefs Association. She was a past member of PA D.A.R.E. Officers Association, National D.A.R.E. Officers Association, PA Polygraph Association, American Association of Police Polygraphists, Boy Scouts PA Dutch Council and Lebanon County Drug Prevention Council.
In 1988, she received Commendation from South Londonderry Township for outstanding work. In 1991, she received the Herman Heisey Award for Outstanding Police Officer in Lebanon County. She was honored four times by M.A.D.D. for outstanding work. In 1996, she received a Commendation from the Attorney General’s Office for outstanding service for municipal drug task force work, and in 1998 she received Nationally Credentialed Law Enforcement Officer.
